crow necklace w/ ammolite

All designs begin as stencils that are drawn by hand onto sheet metal and hand-sawed with a traditional jeweler's saw. This crow is no exception. It has also been hand-hammered to add texture and detail, and given a dark patina to bring out those details. It has been polished to a brushed finish. The back has been stamped with my maker's mark and .925, indicating purity. A flashy red, brown and yellow Ammolite rests in its center, in a fine silver bezel. The pendant is strung on an oxidized 9" sterling silver chain.

Ammolite is the product of fossilized Ammonite shells. Ammonites were marine invertebrae animals that became extinct on Earth around 65 million years ago. They display a unique array of colors when held in reflected light, and often rival Opals and Labradorite with their full spectrum color display. Ammolite is also a pretty rare material. All of the world's commercial production comes from a small area along the St. Mary River in Alberta, Canada. Two companies mine them there where the ammonite fossils are found.
