australian opal ring {size 7}

0.00

Australian opal doublet, set in a fine silver serrated bezel, in a sterling silver backplate + band. Stamped with .925, indicating purity. This ring has been given a final polish and brought to a high shine.

The mines of Australia produce about 90% of the world's opals. Some of the famous mines include: Koroit, Coober Pedy, Mintabie, and Lightning Ridge. Gem-quality opals are one of the most spectacular minerals - they can flash colors from all over the spectrum. An opal doublet consists of a thin layer of opal and a thicker layer of backing. Often, this is done to aid in the lapidary and stone setting process, as opals are soft minerals.
